US ends war in Iraq - to quit Afghanistan in 2011 ![]() President Obama says America's combat mission in Iraq is over On Tuesday,31st August 2010, US President Barack Obama gave Americans an update on the two wars the U.S. has been fighting. In a speech from the Oval Office in the White House, he declared an end to the U.S. combat mission in Iraq. He also said that next summer he expects to start bringing American troops home from Afghanistan. The President inherited two wars when he took office in 2009. At the time, the U.S. was at war in two faraway countries, Afghanistan and Iraq. The U.S. has been at war in Iraq since 2003. The war in Afghanistan is now the longest war in American history. It has lasted almost 10 years. President Obama noted the extraordinary cost of war. "Thousands of Americans gave their lives; tens of thousands have been wounded," he said.
