Could conversion and Islam protect a Hindu girl?

A Hindu girl accepts a marriage proposal from an Afghan boy. She neglects caution from her parents, wellwishers and resists opposition to the marriage from them. She secretely marries the Afghan boy and elopes with him to the Afghanistan. She converts and takes a Muslim name as ‘Sayeda Kamala’. She lives in the joint family of her husband with three brother in laws, their wives and children. Soon she discovers, shockingly, that her lover-husband already married and that he still continues living with her. Still she reconciles and continues to live in Afghanistan in ancestral house of her husband. She is a trained nurse and she decides to help women of her surroundings with her knowledge. But, the situation in her surroundings is very restrictive to women due to rapid religionalism of Afghan society. She privately provides counselling to sick women. Taliban Islamists find her clinic and orders forcible closure. She resists. And she is beaten in her house by outside men in front of her family members. She was given punishment of death. But, she escapes from her village with great difficulty. Reaches Kabul andl flees back to India.

She writes many books, gives interviews, talks freely about anything and everything freely. After few years, she decides to go back to Afghanistan. Probably, she was given assurance by her ‘loving’ husband and family members of her husband. Probably, they were forced to bring her back to Afghanistan. For some reason or for a combination of reasons, she returns after 18 years.

She starts to work as a health worker. One day, within few months of her arrival, armed men enter her house. Tie her husband and abscond with her. Later, near a Madrasa, her dead body is found next morning. The corpse had 20 bullet holes.

Committment to love, conversion to another religion, and tolerating a polygynist husband could not even ensure safety and life of the girl. The girl was Sushmita Banerjee who died as Afghan Sayeda. Conversion and Islam, compromise, sacrifice, and perseverence could not save the Hindu girl.

Duplicity kills Sarabjit Singh

Duplicity of Pak officials and religious bigots of Pakistan were responsible for killing of Sarabjit of India.

Sarabjit Singh, who has died from his injuries after being attacked in a Pakistani prison, was convicted of spying and sentenced to death in 1991.  According to Pakistan, his real name was Manjit Singh and was involved in the 1990 bomb attacks in Lahore and Faisalabad in which 14 people died. But his family have always insisted on his innocence. They say he was a farmer who strayed into Pakistan by mistake while drunk and that he is the victim of mistaken identity.

Born in 1964, native of Bhikhiwind in Tarn Taran district near the border with Pakistan, Sarabjit dropped out of school and worked on farms to support his family. He was playing kabaddi was also a very good wrestler who had no match in the region. Singh was farming a field close to the Pakistan border on the day he crossed over to Pakistan. After work, Sarabjit crossed over to Pakistan, possibly in an inebriated state. His trial was unfair and he confessed under torture. His lawyers at the time also failed to appear for the hearing. It is believed that he was caught up in the political manoeuvrings of Delhi and Islamabad. He was prosecuted and convicted in English – when he speaks only Punjabi and Urdu – and there are other serious questions over the fairness of his trial, including allegations that he was tortured in custody and forced to confess.
Sarabjit Singh’s family in India was given little access to him when he was alive – his sister Dalbir Kaur was allowed by the Lahore High Court to meet him in jail in June 2011 and that was only the second time he was allowed a visit. The meeting duration was about 90 minutes during which he enquired about his wife, two daughters, neighbors and relatives. The two exchanges presents. While Ms. Kaur tied Rakhi, Sarbjit wept and as a return gift, he gave her a bangle which he had made in jail.

After the hanging of Afzal Guru in India, militants in Pakistan posed a threat to the life of Sarabjit. Duplicity of law enforcing agencies and religious institutions was on cards. He was attacked with bricks by inmates in Lahore’s jail. Careful observers of attitude of Islamic intolerants are not surprised by the attack. Sarabjit Singh fell into a coma after Friday’s (26th April 2013) attack in Lahore’s Jinnah hospital and died on Thursday morning. After the killing of Sarabjit, his lawyer Awais Sheikh was being followed and harassed. A CID official had tried to kidnap Awais a day before the death of Sarabjit Singh. His family has been receiving threatening phone calls and letters from individuals who claim to be Taliban.

Meanwhile a Pakistani prisoner, Sanaullah Haq, suffered critical head injuries after he was attacked by a fellow inmate at the high-security Kot Bhalwal jail in Jammu, in Jammu and Kashmir. He has been admitted to intensive care at a Jammu hospital and doctors say he is in a coma. Sanaullah detonated bombs at electric towers and government buildings in Jammu and Kashmir in 1990. He was sentenced to eight years imprisonment by a Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act (TADA) and Prevention of Terrorism Act (POTA) court in 2008. Haq has been in prison for the past 17 years. The attack happened on Friday morning after an argument between Haq and Vinod Kumar, a former soldier. The attack could be a logical reaction to the killing of Sarabjit if not a planned retaliat on by India. It is reported that Sanaullah cited Sarabjit during a quarrel with Vinod Kumar which enraged him to initiate the attack.

Saudi Arabia uses technology to restrict women

Saudi Arabia, a model Islamic country, has introduced technology that alerts male “guardians” by text whenever women under their guardianship leave the country.

The kingdom already bans women from driving and excludes them from most workplaces. It also disapproves of women’s sport. Since last week it has been operating a new electronic system that tracks all cross-border movements.

The system functions even if a woman is travelling with her husband or male guardian, with a text sent immediately to the man. Saudi women must get formal approval from their guardians to travel abroad, and have to hand in an yellow slip, signed by a male, at the airport or border.

Religion v/s Democracy deadlock continues

Suspected Christian adherents in United States of America released a movie and Leftist news paper in France published caricatures.  Muslims world wide react violently  to the depiction of Prophet Muhammad.

On the 11th anniversary of 9/11, Bacile, who is either an American Christian or a Jew, released on Youtube a 13-minute trailer for a two hour short movie, titled “Innocence of Muslims” Its Arabic translation was made available from some unauthenticated sources. The movie and its trailer has created unrest in Egypt and resulted in the killing of US ambassador in a rocket launch attack.

Prophet Mohammad in Innocence of Muslims movie

The scenes in the trailer portrayed the prophet Muhammad as a buffoon, suicidal, gay, lascivious and condoning of pedophilia. “Our prophet had 61 wives — 11 at the same time. He even had a girlfriend!” That’s the opening line, delivered poorly by a man almost definitely in brown-face makeup. “Every non-Muslim is an infidel. Their lands, their women, their children, are our spoils,” Muhammad says in one scene. Characters refer to him as a “bastard” and in one scene, a veiled woman asks Muhammad to “put your head between my thighs.” The film claims Muhammad was a fraud. His obedient followers are presented as a cadre of goons. It depicts Muhammad as a feckless philanderer who approved of child sexual abuse. The movie depicts the prophet mohammed sleeping with women, and as a feckless philanderer who approved of child sexual abuse, talking about killing children and referring to a donkey as “the first Muslim animal” and asks the creature if it likes the ladies. The movie has scenes implying the Koran was not divinely inspired, but drafted from verses plagiarised from the New Testament and Torah.

The movie, both English version and its Egyptian Arabic version, has an amateur cast. The voice and the audio appears to be artificial and edited. Critics of the movie allege that insults about the Prophet Muhammad are disguised as revelations in dialogues. Th ere are doubts expressed now about the identity of the producer of the movie.  Actors of the movie have expressed ignorance about the intent of the movie and have regreted the violence reactions the film has created.

Front page of the French Magazine Charlie Hebdo showing a Jew pushing the prophet in a wheel chair

A Satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo has hit the news stands on Sept 19th 2012 with a cover showing an Orthodox Jew pushing the turbaned figure of Mohammad in a wheelchair. The weekly carries a total of four cartoons which include images definitely intended to represent Mohammed, as opposed to any other Muslim. In two of them, the Prophet is shown naked. One is inspired by Jean-Luc Godard’s 1963 film Contempt and features the naked Prophet asking the director “You like my buttocks?” – parroting a line delivered by Brigitte Bardot in the film. Another shows the founder of Islam crouched on all fours with a star coming out of his behind with the inscription “A Star Is Born.” The film references were an attempt to satirise the crudely-made short film Innocence of Muslims, which has triggered the worldwide protests.

Charlie Hebdo’s editor, Stephane Charbonnier, has defended the cartoons. “I’m not asking strict Muslims to read Charlie Hebdo, just like I wouldn’t go to a mosque to listen to speeches that go against everything I believe,” he said. French prime minister Jean-Marc Ayrault has called for “responsibility” and said anyone offended by the caricatures could sue. But he made it clear there would be no action against the weekly. “We are in a country where freedom of expression is guaranteed, including the freedom to caricature,” he said.

The left-wing, libertarian publication’s offices were firebombed last year after it published an edition “guest-edited” by the Prophet Mohammed that it called Sharia Hebdo.

Wafa Sultan – Arab Woman exposing Islam

Wafa Sultan (born June 14, 1958, Baniyas, Syria) is a medical doctor who trained as a psychiatrist in Syria, and an American author and critic of Muslim society and Islam.

Wafa SultanLife and career
Sultan was born into a large traditional Alawite Muslim family in Baniyas, Syria. Although Sultan wanted to be a writer, and would have preferred to study Arabic literature, she studied at the Medical faculty at the University of Aleppo due to pressure from her family.

She was shocked in 1979 by atrocities committed by Islamic extremists of the Muslim Brotherhood against innocent Syrians. While she was a medical student, She witnessed the machine-gun assassination of her professor of the university who was renowned outside Syria. Islamic extremists shot hundreds of bullets into , Yusef al Yusef, an ophthalmologist from, shouting, ‘Allahu Akbar!’ . From that point, She lost my trust in Allah and began to question Islamic teachings. It was the turning point of her life.

She worked for four years as a psychiatrist in a hospital. She, her teacher husband and children immigrated to the United States in 1989, where she moved to Los Angeles, California and became a naturalized citizen. Initially she had to work as a cashier in a gas station and behind the counter in a pizza parlour, but found her treatment in these jobs better than as a medical professional in Syria. From the time of her arrival she begun to contribute articles to Arabic publications in the United States and published three books in Arabic.

Sultan became notable after the September 11, 2001 attacks for her participation in Middle East political debates, with Arabic essays that were circulated widely, and for television appearances on Al Jazeera and CNN in 2005. On February 21, 2006, she took part in Al Jazeera’s weekly 45-minute discussion program The Opposite Direction. She spoke from Los Angeles, arguing with host Faisal al-Qassem and with Ibrahim Al-Khouli, a professor at Al-Azhar University in Cairo (Egypt), about Samuel P. Huntington’s Clash of Civilizations theory. A six minute composite video of her remarks was subtitled and widely circulated by MEMRI on blogs and through e-mail; The New York Times estimated that it has been seen at least one million times. In this video she criticised Muslims for treating non-Muslims differently, and for not recognizing the accomplishments of Jewish and other members of non-Muslim society while using their wealth and technology. The video was the most discussed video of all time with over 260,000 comments on the video-sharing website YouTube. The full transcript of the debate which was made public later, also raised many online discussions.

Following her participation in founding of the Former Muslims United on October 13, 2009, Sultan released her first book in English, A God Who Hates: The Courageous Woman Who Inflamed the Muslim World Speaks Out Against the Evils of Islam. In October 2010 Sultan was called as an expert witness to give testimony at the Geert Wilders trial. There she confirmed that she had met Wilders several times in 2009, had seen his film Fitna, and in general agreed with his views about Islam. On January 10, 2011, Sultan, opposing Ibrahim Ramey, appeared on the Russian television news show CrossTalk with host Peter Lavelle, where she stated: “I’m not against Muslims, I’m against Islam.”

In 2006 Wafa Sultan was named in Time Magazine in a list of 100 influential people in the world “whose power, talent or moral example is transforming the world.” Time stated that “Sultan’s influence flows from her willingness to express openly critical views on Islamic extremism that are widely shared but rarely aired by other Muslims.”

Political views
Sultan describes her thesis as witnessing “a battle between modernity and barbarism which Islam will lose”. It has brought her telephone threats, but also praise from reformers. Her comments, especially a pointed criticism that “no Jew has blown himself up in a German restaurant”, brought her an invitation to Jerusalem by the American Jewish Congress. Sultan believes that “The trouble with Islam is deeply rooted in its teachings. Islam is not only a religion. Islam [is] also a political ideology that preaches violence and applies its agenda by force.” According to her, Islamic teachings are responsible for distorting the terrorist and for killing his/her humanity. She describes herself as a Muslim who does not believe in Islam, yet remains associated with the faith through her birth. Wafa Sultan believes that King Abdullah can change Islam overnight, if sufficient pressure is put on him. She advocates nuclear attack on Islamic countries as a means of pressurizing them. She is concerned that nothing is being done about infiltration of Islam . She thinks getting involved in politics as the solution and supports Geert Wilders.

Wafa Sultan, joined author Ali Sina, the German activist Stefan Herre of Politically Incorrect; and the Israeli author Mordechai Kedar to form a new organization called Stop Islamization of Nations (SION) in the third week of January, 2012. Other members are the Hindu activist Babu Suseelan; Anders Gravers of Stop Islamisation of Europe (SIOE), Swiss politician Oskar Freysinger, Cliff Kincaid, editor of the Accuracy in Media (AIM) Report, and Ashraf Rameleh the President of Voice of the Copts. Pamela Geller and Robert Spencer are President and Vice President of SION.

Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Aleppo, Syrian expatriates Adnan Halabi and Ghada Moezzin have disputed the account of Wafa Sultan about the firing and assasination of her professor in the campus of University of Aleppo. According to them, it took place off campus, and that no one had ever been killed anywhere at the university.

HuJI – an introduction

Harkat-ul-Jihad-al-Islami (HuJI or HJI) meaning “Islamic Struggle Movement”, is an Islamic fundamentalist organization most active in South Asian countries of Pakistan, Bangladesh and India since the early 1990s.

HuJI or HJI was formed in 1984 by Fazalur Rehman Khalil and Qari Saifullah Akhtar, as the first Pakistan-based jihadist, during the Soviet-Afghan War.Khalil later broke away to form his own group Harkat-ul-Ansar (HuA), which later emerged as the most feared militant organization in Kashmir. This group would later re-form as Harkat-ul-Mujahideen (HuM), when HuA was banned by the United States in 1997. HuJI first limited its operations in Afghanistan to defeating the Communists, but after the Soviets retreated, the organization exported jihad to the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir under the patronage of ISI and the Pakistani establishment. HuJI’s footprint was extended to Bangladesh when the Bangladesh unit was established in 1992, with direct assistance from Osama bin Laden.

HuJI espoused a Pan-Islamic ideology, and has goals of bringing the entire world under Shariat law. It is established in violent means to liberate Kashmir and make it a part of Pakistan. HuJI is also involved in destruction of two Hindu temples in Varanasi. HuJI and HuM were both strongly backed by the Taliban, and therefore the group professed Taliban-style fundamentalist Islam. The group lured the teenagers from Madrasas as recruits and they proceeded to military training in the camps located in Afghanistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir.

Several governments have proscribed HuJI as a terrorist organization. In October 2005, Bangladesh banned the militant group. On August 6, 2010 the United States and the United Nations designated Harakat-ul Jihad al-Islami as a foreign terror group and blacklisted its commander Ilyas Kashmiri. Ilyas Kashmiri, was reportedly killed in a U.S. Predator drone strike in South Waziristan on June 4 2011 He was linked to the February 13 2010 bombing of a German bakery in the Indian city of Pune.

Major strikes on India by HuJI include attack near the American Centre in Kolkatta (2002), Delhi-Patna Shramjeevi Express bombing (2005), Suicide bombing of the AP counter terrorism special task force (2005), Varanasi bombing (2006), Hyderabad bombings (2007), Jaipur, Bangalore, Ahmadabad, Agartala, Assam bombings(2008), Delhi serial blasts (2008) and Delhi bombing (2011).

Bangladesh girl ‘lashed to death’

Four people including a Muslim cleric have been arrested in Bangladesh in connection with the death of 14-year-old girl who was publicly lashed.

The teenager was accused of having an affair with a married man, police say, and the punishment was given under Islamic Sharia law.

Hena Begum’s family members said a village court consisting of elders and clerics passed the sentence.

She was alleged to have had the affair with her cousin and received 80 lashes.

Talaq joke on Skype ends marriage

An e-savvy Qatar resident typed talaq thrice while chatting with his wife on Skype. He says he did not mean it but Dar-ul-Uloom Deoband has ruled that his nikah stands terminated.

That’s not all. The man can remarry his divorced wife only after halaala, a practice under which the woman has to marry another man, consummate her marriage and be divorced by her new  man before she can marry her previous husband again.

Deoband’s fatwa section — Dar-ul-Ifta (DuI) — recently received a written request from Qatar, seeking a fatwa on a rather amusing situation. The youth stated that he was recently chatting with his wife on Skype when he typed the word ‘talaq’ three times, though he did not mean it and asked if his nikah was still valid.

Dar-ul-Ifta shot back that the nikah stands terminated. “When you pronounce talaq three times, it means talaq has taken place, and it does not matter whether the woman has reciprocated or not. Your wife has become ‘haraam’ for you whether you are aware of the commandment of Islam or not. You neither have the right to take her back nor solemnise new nikah with her without a valid ‘halaala’. After the completion of ‘iddah’ (iddat) period, the woman can marry where she wishes except you,” the seminary said.

Somalia: Islamists hack limbs off to keep order

He has learned to button his shirt using only his left hand, to roll his sleeve with his teeth, to balance on his right foot in the shower. He cannot forgive, though he is desperate to forget. But at night his dreams betray him.

This is how it happened, Abdulle told the Guardian. He was a prisoner in an insurgents’ house in Mogadishu, lying on his side, one hand chained to his ankles. He was 17, with fluff on his cheeks and unspeakable fear in his heart. Three other young men were with him — Jalylani, Ali, Abduqadir.

A guard, from the Islamist group al-Shabaab, which is trying to overthrow the Somali government, gripped his shoulder. “Ismael Khalif Abdulle, come with me.” A convoy of rebel battlewagons cleared the way through the battered streets. Reaching Masalah, an old military barracks, he saw his mother through the car window and shouted to her. The guard slapped his face. “Today is not the day to call your mother,” he said.

Ordered to witness the punishment of the “spies and bandits” or face lashes themselves, the entire neighbourhood had assembled. Also watching were some of the Shabaab’s top leaders — Sheikh Mukhtar Robow, the Somali-Swede Fuad Shangole, and Abu Mansoor Al-Amriki, the American who recruits and finances foreign fighters.

Cross amputation

In the middle of the stony parade ground were about 20 militiamen in green fatigues. Their faces were masked. They were wearing surgical gloves. On the ground was a single plastic mattress.

Abdulle says he was made to lie down. His left hand was tied to his right ankle with a thick rope, leaving the other limbs free for what was to come. Rubber surgical tubing bit into his right biceps — a tourniquet. One rebel grabbed his hand, another his forearm. They pulled in opposite directions as a piece of plastic was laid over his wrist.

“Please make it quick,” he pleaded.

A heavily built man drew a large wooden-handled knife normally used to slaughter camels. The knife descended.

Though their horror was far from over, Abdulle and the three other young men “cross amputated” — a process of cutting off a hand and foot from opposite sides of the body — by the Shabaab on 26 June 2009, eventually escaped from their Islamist captors, and managed to cross to the government-controlled side of the city. Abdulle recently managed to flee Somalia, and reach a safe house in Nairobi, Kenya, where he gave this interview.

His story offers a rare insight into how the Shabaab is using its extreme interpretation of Islam to establish order through fear — and to find recruits.

Abdulle was born in 1992, a year after the last effective government fell, and warlords took over the country. As far as it is possible to have a normal upbringing amid the anarchy, he did. Once Shabaab forces took full control of the Bakara market area where he lived, in early 2009, security immediately improved — but at a huge cost to personal and social freedoms.

“If you saw a man on the street with a beard, you would be worried,” Abdulle said. “But if someone was smoking a cigarette, you felt OK.”

The Shabaab recruited some of Abdulle’s classmates to fight the government, but he insists that he never had anything to do with the Islamists until the day he was abducted.

He said he was not told of his alleged crime until the 26th day of detention, when he and the three other young men were taken to the old military parade ground for the first time. Pistols and mobile phones, allegedly stolen by the accused, were shown to the crowd. Abdulle insists on his innocence to this day, but he was given no chance to speak. Dahir Ga’may, a Shabaab “judge”, merely announced his verdict.

“He said we were guilty as spies and thieves, and that under sharia law a hand and a foot must be amputated.” Three days later, the sentence was carried out. Abdulle passed out while his hand was being cut off. After he regained consciousness he heard the screams as the amputations continued. It was several hours before they were given pain relief, and two days before their wounds were stitched.

A fortnight later, Shangole, the Shabaab commander, arrived at the house where they were detained. “He said they had made a mistake. Our legs were cut too low down, and needed to be shortened. He took the end of my leg, and put three fingers above the stump and said: ‘That’s where it should be.’” This time, the surgical tool was a plumber’s saw. As before, there were no painkillers.

On a separate visit, Ga’may told them that as they were disabled they should become suicide attackers. Sensing a chance to escape, they agreed. A taxi called by a relative picked them up, and took them to the justice ministry. The Red Crescent Society in Mogadishu fitted him with an artificial limb.

His passage out of Mogadishu was risky, as the Shabaab were still after him. In Nairobi, he’s keeping a low profile, as the insurgents have supporters in the city. His hope now is to gain asylum and help to deal with the physical and mental scars.

Its evolution

Harakat al-Shabaab al-Mujahideen, better known as al-Shabaab — “the youth” — rose to prominence in 2006 as the armed wing of a sharia court alliance that forced warlords from the Somali capital, Mogadishu. After Ethiopian troops routed the Islamist movement later that year, the Shabaab re-emerged as a guerrilla army, initially winning the sympathy of many Somalis — and attracting hundreds of foreign jihadis. Once Ethiopia withdrew in January 2009, Shabaab militants took over much of south and central Somalia, targeting government forces and African Union peacekeepers. It quickly established security but the group’s extreme interpretation of Islam and its targeting of civilians has alienated most Somalis. Its “clerics” have banned everything from films to mobile ringtones, school bells and gold fillings.
