A press mee that wasn’t – by the PM

Though the Prime Minister did not reply to a journalist’s query of why he had convened his press meet for the electronic media editors, it was very obvious that it was a feeble attempt to correct his image, which during the past few months has taken a beating.

Most importantly, he made a statement which amounted to the following: In a coalition govt. compromises are necessary, though he felt uncomfortable with them. This is certainly unacceptable because, what is the compromise that he is talking about? Let his colleagues indulge in corruption, nepotism & dont act because it will bring the UPA govt. down?

One of the views is that, in the previous UPA govt. PM was supported by left & DMK. Congress was a weak party & would have collapsed without these parties’ support. Hence, PM did not act despite his cognizence on the matter. This is also confirmed  by statements of Arun Shourie last week. Now that the scams have come out one behind the other, he is trying to clean up the image. Readers may also remember that the Congress had got open support by Jayalalitha in case DMK pulls out its support. All this has prompted the PM to act against Raja this time while he knew the issues years ago. As a citizen, I would not feel comfortable to see even a personality like Dr. Manmohan Singh placing justice as the second priority to the power/prevention of the collapse of UPA Govt.

Kashmir and Varnashrama – problems due to propaganda

Propaganda by definition is spreading biased information for the purpose of promoting some cause. It helps in creating and strengthening an environment which is conducive to take steps towards the goal that it is intended to achieve. Understandably, a typical propaganda will create some negative consequences and subsequently undesirable situations. To understand and reduce ill efects of any propaganda, the extent of damage it has already created has to be assessed.
In any propaganda, there will be two groups – propagandists, those who design propaganda and the target group – those who are recipients of the propaganda.

In this context, it is instructive to list the stages of progression of a propaganda. To decide on how to tackle the ill effects of the propaganda, the first step would be to identify the maturity level of the propaganda campaign.

A propaganda campaign has four sequential stages.

  1. Exposure – Distribution of material, Making aware of the argument  The target group of the propaganda is aware of the allegations or criticisms stated by the propagandists against them.
  2. Compel – Making one to respond   In this stage, the members of the target group are compelled to react and respond to the allegations hurled at them.
  3. Involve – Make some one to reinforce, reiterate or approve  As the propaganda becomes stronger, many groups in the target group start reinforcing the ideas, allegations or criticisms of the propagandists while making an attempt to respond to ward off the criticisms.
  4. Aambassadorial – Advocate, vouch   A member of the target group internalises the criticisms but continues to respond simultaneously – exhibit dichotomy in thoughts and actions
A propaganda becomes more successful as it proceeds from one stage to the next. It becomes more difficult to reverse the ill effects the propaganda in higher stages.

In India, there are two problems which are influenced by the sustained propaganda from a very long period of time. Here they are identified and the stage of the propaganda in each of these cases is assessed.

Varnasharama
Propaganda against Varnashrama of Hinduism is going on atleast from last 400 years. Propaganda has already reached the 4th stage and we see many Hindus, especially socially active, vouching for the points raised by the anti Varnashrama propagandists. More number of Hindus reiterate and reinforce the allegations and conclusions about Varnashrama in a casusal way even while  addressing topics that are not directly related to Varnashrama in particular and Hinduism in general. Awareness about the allegation is so high (almost 100%) and internalisation of the allegations is so complete that most of the time, there will be no reactions / respose / discussions about these things.

Kashmir
Kashmir as a disputed land and Pakistan and China as parties to it has wider acceptance. Arguments in favor of India is less widely known compared to the arguments in favor of Pakistan. Response is typically high from official circles and it appears as if  there are few takers among the general public. Pakistani / Jihadi allegations against India are reinforced  in most of the discussions about Kashmir in India. The propaganda against Kashmir as integral part of India has reached third stage.

Hon’ble K’taka Governer – in the news for wrong reasons!!

Though the disqualified MLAs would appeal to the Supreme court, initial victory has been of the CM & the Speaker. But we must not lose the focus of the high handed manner in which Honorable Governer acted during the confidence Vote. At this stage it shows that Honorable was partisan, hasty in recommending the dismissal of the Govt. While he has allowed to prsecute CM, who would rectify the mistakes from his side? Readers may remember that he had also denied awarding of honorary Doctoral degree to reknowned writer Chidananda Murthy. Later a protest by Kannada activists, pressure by senior  Kannda writers etc made the Gov. succumb to the pressure.

RSS writes letter to PM

Sarkaryawah (working chief) of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh Suresh (Bhayya) Joshi has written a letter to Prime Minister of India on 9th February 2011 and has requested a meeting at a mutually convenient time to discuss this issue.

The purpose of this letter is to bring to your attention the deliberate attempts to distort, even pervert and politicise, the ongoing investigations into the bomb blasts at Malegaon. Ajmer and Hyderabad and to cast false aspersions on the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh [RSS].

A single fact in the Government’s hands will nail this lie. The Maharashtra ATS [MATS] has evidence in its possession to show that the accused in the Malegaon blast case, Col Purohit and Dayanand Pandey, were, simultaneously plotting to eliminate Shri Mohanrao Bhagwat, the then Sarkaryavah – General Secretary – of the RSS (currently the Sarsanghachalak), and a senior RSS leader Shri indresh Kumar. At the time of the Malegaon investigations, a senior Maharashtra ATS official had informed one of our prominent leaders about this conspiracy by the above mentioned Malegaon accused. Yet, some elements in the investigative agencies have been trying to club the RSS with those very same people who were plotting against it. The fundamental question that arises, but not addressed, is: how could the RSS be bracketed with those who were viciously hostile to it and conspiring to kill its leaders?

The Charge Sheet of the Maharashtra ATS dated 20.1.2009 on the Malegaon blast submitted to the Court contains the transcripts of the audio CDs detailing the conversations of the said accused. They revealed that, while the plotters were organising chemical attack on Sri Bhagwat, they had given a pistol to a named, specific person to eliminate Sri Indresh Kumar. The CD recordings showed that the conspirators were spewing venom at the RSS and the BJP. This extra-judicial confession conclusively proved that the RSS was a target of the accused persons in the Malegaon case.

Recently, the media [Indian Express dt 28.1.2011] has reported, citing Military Intelligence [MI] Report, that Col Purohit had also admitted [as early as on 29.9.2008] that, at the instance of Dayanand Pandey he had plotted to kill Sri Indresh Kumar – the reason being Col Purohit’s suspicion that Sri Indresh Kumar was an ISI agent. Purohit had also said that the plot was activated during Col Purohit’s visit to Panchmarhi during January 2008; that, at that meeting, Dayanand Pandey asked Col Purohit to procure weapons for killing Sri Indresh Kumar; that Col Purohit handed over a 9 mm pistol to one Alok, close associate of Dayanand Pandey, at Bhopal Railway Station to kill Sri Indresh Kumar in Delhi. MATS and MI had interrogated and obtained this confession from Col Purohit, which corroborated with the audio recordings mentioned earlier. So MATS was fully aware of the specifics of the conspiracy to kill the RSS leaders.

But despite being in possession of such explosive, critical and specific evidence of the plot the MATS took a “conscious decision” and told the Bombay High Court in July 2010 that, as there was nothing ‘”specific”, “no further action is required to be taken” on the alleged plot to kill the RSS leaders, “except to wait for the outcome of the pending trial”. The MATS told a clear lie to the court. It admittedly has specific information about the plot. The plot to murder any one is a serious issue. In this case it is an independent offence, unrelated to the Malegaon offence and trial. So there was no need to link the end of the Malegaon trial to probe this murder plot. It is obviously just an alibi for not probing the murder plot. Delaying the probe also helps destruction of evidence. Yet, the MATS did not even register an FIR in 2008 or later against the conspirators whose extrajudicial confession on the CD had nailed them. This is virtually a decision to abort probe into the conspiracy to murder, which is criminal. The decision of the MATS not to probe the plot to kill the RSS leaders raises unanswerable questions like:

• Was the investigation aborted because the exposure of the plot would foil any attempt to bracket the RSS with the Malegaon conspirators?

• That the decision virtually to abort the probe only helped the detractors of the RSS to carry on insidious campaign against the RSS gives out the motive. We also understand that the murder plot issue was also discussed in the Maharashtra Assembly earlier last year.

The RSS had decided, in good faith, to leave the issue to the MATS and the Maharashtra and Central Governments. But with the MATS criminally forsaking its basic duty under the law and the governments at the State and at the Centre keeping silent about it, the RSS is taking appropriate legal advice about its future course of action.

We were shocked when the involvement of Col Purohit in the Malegaon case and in the conspiracy against the RSS came to our notice. But because the issue was sensitive, we had left it to the government to probe his role fully and truthfully. But, as that has not happened, we bring out here the circumstantial evidence that shows that Col Purohit had been playing a political role. We would like to mention how Col Purohit had mysteriously attempted to divide the RSS and its friendly organisations from within. Using his position and his nationalist ideas, he began accessing senior RSS functionaries from the year 2005. Claiming to possess exclusive intelligence no one else had access to, he and his associates planted canards like, that Indresh Kumar was an ISI agent and that the top BJP leaders were conspiring to harm the leaders of the RSS associates. It took a while for the stunned leaders to realise that Col Purohit and his associates were actually attempting to divide and weaken the RSS and its friendly organisations from within.

We believe that Col Purohifs role was political and he was not acting on his own. Thorough probe is needed to find out those behind him in his attempts to divide the RSS and its friendly organisations from within. This larger political conspiracy cannot be unravelled by mere criminal investigation. Col Purohit had been aggressively anti-BJP and anti-RSS as the Malegaon case evidence brings out. Hence arises the issue about his hidden political connections and agenda. It is needless to say that only those who would politically benefit from such strategies could have been behind him. But, only a thorough, independent investigation will expose his political agenda and connections. Similar probe is also required against Dayanand Pandey, whose role is equally mysterious. Otherwise the full truth would remain buried.

The government is fully aware that the RSS and its associate organisations carry out nation-building work all over the country and beyond, in diverse fields and in the remotest areas and among the most distanced people. Many attempts in the past to impede the RSS work have miserably failed. A galaxy of national leaders including Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, Jayaprakash Narayan, Acharya Vinoba Bhave, Acharya Kripalani, Pandit Madanmohan Malaviya, Bharat Ratna Bhagwan Das, Sardar Vallabhai Patel, Dr Zakir Hussain, Lai Bahadur Shastri and General Kariappa have participated in the functions of the RSS, blessed and praised its work. Even Pandit Nehru, who had serious differences with the RSS, finally invited its Swayamsevaks to participate in the Republic Day Parade in January 1963. The commitment of the RSS to our nation and its Constitution is explicit and absolute. It is in keeping with this spirit that I had stated in my statement on 1 May 2010 in the wake of the arrest of the RSS Pracharak Shri Devender Gupta that we would extend all co-operation to the investigation, but also exhorted that the RSS wanted a thorough and transparent probe into the cases.

And we did extend all cooperation to the agencies in the last several months, but only to find that the agencies were intentionally subjecting our cadre to harassment, indignity and even character assassination. Their probe has ceased to be a criminal investigation, and become an alibi for political agenda and calumny against the RSS. There is a political background to this campaign against the RSS. For the past year and more, a senior general secretary of the ruling Congress party has been viciously campaigning against what he called as “saffron terror”. On this basis the ruling party also has asked for investigation into the RSS itself, thus formalising the political mission against the RSS.

It is in this background that I considered it my duty to bring to your notice the larger conspiracy against the RSS, not just a conspiracy to eliminate the RSS leaders. We demand that the government institute an impartial and independent inquiry into the hidden mission of Col Purohit, Dayanand Pandey and their associates. Given the hostility of the ruling party and the way the investigative agencies have conducted the probe so far, no government agency today has the credibility to undertake this task. We therefore urge that the inquiry should be independent. We trust that the hon’ble Prime Minister will take a fair and objective view and order impartial inquiry into

  • The plot to assassinate the RSS leaders;
  • Why did the MATS suppress and not investigate that plot?
  • What is the political role and agenda of Col Purohit, Dayanand Pandey and their associates like Dr. R.P.Singh?
  • Who were behind them in their mission?

Without impartial inquest, answers to these questions and consequently the full truth would not come out.

The RSS, a social organisation, does not intensely interact with the political establishment except through its service activities. So there are not many occasions for the RSS to write to or meet with the hon’ble Prime Minister. Therefore I am not very happy that in my first ever letter I have been constrained to bring to your attention facts which are not entirely pleasant. Also, since the matter is very important as the facts mentioned in the letter bring out, the letter is longer than I would have liked it to be. But I am sure you would find time amid your pressing national duties, to apply mind to the facts and issues mentioned in this letter and act appropriately.

SM Qureshi dropped as Pakistan foreign minister

A new, smaller group of Cabinet ministers took an oath of office Friday in Pakistan, where the ruling party recently agreed to shrink the prime minister’s circle of advisers to save the cash-strapped country some money.

The swear-in ceremony was carried live on state-run Pakistan Television, and most of the incoming ministers appeared to be holdovers from the previous Cabinet dissolved earlier this week. Notably absent was the former foreign minister, Shah Mahmood Qureshi.

President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani presided as about 20 officials sat around a table designated for the new Cabinet — though it was not immediately clear if that will be the final number of members.

PM knew about Raja’s role in 2G scam: Shourie

Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Arun Shourie has claimed that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was informed about former telecom minister A Raja’s involvement in the 2G spectrum scam in 2009. Shourie, who was the telecom minister in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government, said that Singh took no action against Raja even after getting the information about the scam. Speaking exclusively to CNN-IBN, Shourie said that after the Prime Minister did not act on his complaint for a month, he was forced to approach the Central Bureau of Investigation. Shourie also alleged that his own party is not interested in taking the matter forward.

PM warns Islamists could take control in Egypt

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned during his meeting yesterday with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Jerusalem that the continued upheaval in Egypt may bring to power radical Islamic elements, a repeat of the scenario that occurred during the Iranian revolution in 1979.

Netanyahu relayed a similar message in a telephone conversation with U.S. President Barack Obama on Saturday night, and in conversations with other world leaders in recent days.

Congress has distorted thinking on Kashmir, says Advani

Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader L.K. Advani Sunday accused the Congresss of “distorted thinking” on Jammu and Kashmir and said it was a shame that two top political leaders of the country had to observe the Republic Day in the custody of a state government.

In a post on his blog, Advani said the movement for Jammu and Kashmir’s complete integration with India by Shyama Prasad Mukerjee saved the country from possible “disastrous consequences” of the policies of then prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru.

“The gross mishanding by the government of the BJP’s Tiranga yatra reveals that the Congress party has still not abandoned the distorted thinking about Jammu and Kashmir state which made the government committ those early follies,” Advani wrote.

“By undertaking this exercise now, the BJP has done a signal service to the cause of the country’s unity and integrity, for which the party’s founder sacrificed his life,” he added.

Advani said that Pakistan’s leadership mishandled the eastern wing of Pakistan resulting in an independent Bangladesh. “Pandit Nehru’s handling of J&K state – his reference to UN the issue of Pakistan’s aggression on the state, and his conceding a separate constitution and a separate flag to the state – could have had similar disastrous consequences,” he said in his blog.

As Egypt sneezes democracy, China fears catching a cold

The rumblings of a popular discontent threatening to overthrow the 30-year-old autocratic government of Egypt’s President Hosni Mubarak is being acutely felt in China whose communist dictators fear that the uprising could fuel calls for reform at home. The word “Egypt” has now joined the rank of censored or blocked terms on the internet in china, according to the AFP, the Wall Street Journal online (WSJ), and numerous other media services Jan 31.

The WSJ report said the Chinese authorities appeared to have censored the word “Egypt” on Twitter-like microblogging sites in the country. Almost all of the comments posted beneath the few limited reports on the unrest—mostly from the state-run Xinhua news agency—that have been published on Chinese news sites in the past few days had been deleted by Jan 30, it said.

The report noted that the strict online controls illustrated the Communist Party of China’s concern that the Internet was providing China’s citizens with a new means of information and organization that could challenge its monopoly on power, as had happened with other authoritarian governments in recent years.

The report said China’s state media had provided limited coverage of the unrest in Egypt, including the scores of reported deaths, the cutting of Internet and cellphone access, and president’s appointment of a vice president. The AFP report said these stressed the lawlessness in Egypt and the need for order – echoing calls by China’s foreign ministry – and Beijing’s plan to send two chartered jets to Cairo to bring home more than 500 stranded Chinese.
